Historical attractions:

The Uzeste Collegial Church dating back to the 12/13th century. The Church stands at the end of the garden and is a fine example of gothic architecture. Pope Clement V is buried here.

Bazas: Just 8 kilometres from the house, Bazas is a mediaeval town whose 13th century cathedral is listed as a UNESCO heritage sight. Enjoy the ramparts and the small streets and the highlight of the week is the lively food market held every Saturday morning.

The Chateau of Roquetaillade was first built in the 11th Century but underwent extensive renovations during the Renaissance period and then again in the 19th Century under the supervision of the famous French architect, Viollet-le-Duc.

The Chateau de Cazeneuve was an old mediaeval fortress until it was transformed into a palatial retreat in the 17th Century and became a favoured home of the Dukes of Albret, the Navarre Kings, King Henry IV of France and Queen Margot. Don't miss the mediaeval cellars, Troglodyte caves and the Royal rooms.

The Chateau de Villandrault was built in 1305 by Pope Clement V as a Papal residence and is currently being restored.

Malagar was the home of famous French writer Francois Mauriac

Chateau Malrome is famous as Toulouse-Lautrec's family home. The painter died here in 1901

The Entre-Deux-Mers region produces fine wines but is also home to a number of traditional properties and castles which are worth visiting, such as Saint-Macaire, Sauveterre de Guyenne, Cadillac, Montsegur and so on...

The town of Bordeaux is 45 minutes from Uzeste and, in 2007, was the first urban and architectural ensemble to be included on the UNESCO World Heirtage list. A city of art and history, Bordeaux' famous landmarks make it a sought-after destination with tourists from around the world.

Just 8 kilometres from Libourne and nestled among the vineyards, the fortified town of Saint Emilion is synonymous with good wine also features on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites.

The area has several world famous vineyards such as Sauternes, Graves and Entre-deux-Mers and we would be happy to arrange tours of the property with a wine-tasting session for you.

The Marquese Eco-Museum will give you a glimpse in to the history of 'Les Landes' and a feel of how life used to be in this region of France

For music lovers many festivals take place in and around Uzeste during the summer months


As part of a baroque music festival, several concerts are held in different wine producing chateaux in the Graves and Sauternes wine regions, followed by wine tasting sessions.

Outdoors and Sports:

Cycle path: From Uzeste to Bazas and on to Mios in the Arcachon basin on the coast
This winding cycle path takes you on a scenic trip through the beautiful pine forest of the Landes de Gascogne national park. The 62-kilometre track is one of the most famous in the region and follows the old railway tracks eventually leading to the Arcachon Basin on the Atlantic coast.

Walking trails: Maps showing the local routes are available at the house

Canoeing on the river Ciron: Exciting canoeing options just 10-minutes away by car. There are other possibilities at the canoeing centre in Cayac de Bommes.

Golf: Well established golf course in the heart of the Graves and the Sauternais wine region. 15 kilometres away.

Horse riding: Forest rides are available at the Chateau Perron horse riding centre just 5 kilometres away.

Arcachon basin and also the Dune du Pyla: 60 kilometres away is the Atlantic coast. The basin is home to a bird nature reserve and also the Dune du Pyla, Europe's largest sand dune standing at 107 metres tall -  a great place for kids to roll down or for a stroll overlooking the white crests of the Atlantic breakers.
